ATL 2.0 is here! In a big leap for school innovation, Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and CBSE are rolling out an AI‑powered robotics curriculum for over 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) across India, turning these labs into smart, future‑ready hubs for young makers and innovators.

What is ATL 2.0?

ATL 2.0 is the next phase of the Atal Tinkering Labs initiative, where existing labs are being upgraded with AI, robotics, and IoT modules to match the new CBSE AI and Computational Thinking (CT) curriculum. The goal is simple but powerful: move from basic tinkering to building AI‑enabled robots and smart systems that solve real problems in students’ communities.

Under this upgrade, schools with ATLs will get updated kits (including sensors, microcontrollers like Arduino, and AI modules), new project‑based modules, and teacher training to deliver an AI‑integrated robotics curriculum from Class 6 onwards.

AI + Robotics in the Classroom

The new curriculum blends hands‑on robotics with AI concepts, so students don’t just build robots — they make them smart. For example:

  • Students will design robots that can follow lines, avoid obstacles, and sort waste using computer vision.
  • They’ll train simple AI models to recognize images or voice commands and integrate them into their robots.
  • Projects will focus on real-world challenges, including smart agriculture bots, AI-based water level monitors, and robots for disaster response or healthcare assistance.

This aligns perfectly with CBSE’s new AI & CT curriculum, which introduces AI and computational thinking from Class 3 and makes AI a compulsory subject in Classes 9–10, with ML as an elective in Classes 11–12.

How Schools Can Upgrade to ATL 2.0

Schools with existing ATLs can now apply for the ATL 2.0 upgrade, which includes:

  • New AI & Robotics Kits: Updated hardware with sensors, actuators, and AI modules for building smart robots.
  • AI‑Integrated Curriculum: Project‑based modules on AIoT (AI + IoT), physical computing, and design thinking, mapped to CBSE’s AI & CT framework.
  • Teacher Training: Specialized training for ATL in‑charge teachers on AI, robotics, and project mentoring, often in collaboration with CBSE and partner institutions.

The focus is on making every ATL a “creation lab” where students move from ideas to prototypes, and from prototypes to real solutions for their schools and communities.
