Kerala Makes Robotics Education Mandatory for Class 10—National First!

Kerala has made history by becoming the first state in India to mandate robotics education for all Class 10 students starting from June 2, 2025. This bold initiative integrates robotics as a compulsory chapter titled “The World of Robots” within the tenth-grade Information and Communication Technology (ICT) textbook. The curriculum focuses on hands-on learning where more than 4.3 lakh students across Kerala will engage with real-life robotics projects as part of their regular studies.

Students will begin by building simple electronic circuits using components such as Arduino breadboards, IR sensors, servo motors, and jumper wires. They will also learn computer programming with beginner-friendly platforms like Pictoblox. Early projects include creating automatic hand sanitiser dispensers that operate upon sensing hand movement. As they progress, students will delve into more advanced tasks, such as designing smart home automation systems equipped with AI features like facial recognition.

To support this ambitious rollout, Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) has distributed nearly 29,000 AI robotics kits to schools and trained about 9,924 teachers to effectively deliver the new curriculum. The ICT textbooks, available in Malayalam, English, Tamil, and Kannada, ensure accessibility for diverse linguistic groups across the state.

This groundbreaking move reflects Kerala’s commitment to preparing its students for a technology-driven future. By emphasising creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking through hands-on robotics, Kerala aims to empower young learners with skills crucial for emerging industries and innovation.

With robotics education now compulsory at the secondary school level, Kerala sets a national benchmark and serves as an example for other states to integrate future-ready STEM Education learning into their education systems.

This initiative is not just about adding a new subject — it represents a transformative shift towards equipping students for the demands and opportunities of the 21st century.
