India Overtakes Rivals in Robot Installations—Racing Ahead as Sixth-Largest Robot Nation!

India has surged into the global spotlight, officially ranking as the sixth-largest installer of industrial robots worldwide—a record-breaking leap that puts the country ahead of several major economies and signals a new chapter in manufacturing innovation.

A Record Year: The Numbers Behind the Rise

According to the World Robotics 2025 Report by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), India installed 9,120 industrial robots in 2024, a 7% increase from the previous year. This achievement places India sixth globally, right behind advanced robotics leaders like Germany, South Korea, the United States, Japan, and China. For context, this uptick has sent India past countries such as France, Spain, and Italy in annual robot installations, making headlines worldwide.

The country’s total operational stock reached over 52,000 units, highlighting not just a one-time spike but sustained investment and adoption. The majority of these robots work in factories and production lines, boosting efficiency, accuracy, and output across a diverse industrial base.

Why Is India Racing Ahead?

A crucial driver is the automotive industry, which maintains nearly half the market share for robot installations. In 2024, automotive robot installations hit 4,070—an all-time high—powered by a 15% jump in car part suppliers embracing automation. General industries like plastics, chemicals, and metals are following suit, each logging double-digit growth in robotic adoption.

India’s factory floors are rapidly modernizing for productivity, safety, and scale, with sectors like rubber, plastics, and metals showing an appetite for automation previously seen only in the biggest multinationals. Robots are now shaping, assembling, welding, and packaging goods at speeds and precision levels that human labor simply cannot match.

The Policy Push: Make in India and More

India’s emergence as a robotics powerhouse is fueled by a blend of government policy and corporate ambition. Programs like “Make in India” and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes are credited with turbocharging domestic manufacturing by incentivizing advanced automation. The OECD predicts a GDP growth rate for India of 6.3% per annum for 2025 and 2026, with rising global and domestic demand encouraging more companies to invest in smart factories.

Global Comparisons: Catching Up, Room to Grow

While surging robot installations are a reason to celebrate, industry experts point out that India still has considerable room for catch-up. For instance, China remains the unchallenged global leader, boasting over 2 million robots in operation and an annual installation rate more than thirty times higher than India. Likewise, robot density—a key metric of automation maturity—remains low in India, with only 7 robots per 10,000 manufacturing workers compared to the global average of 141. In automotive, India’s robot density is 148 per 10,000, while South Korea leads at 2,867.

The Road Ahead: Opportunities and Challenges

India’s climb up the robot rankings will likely continue for the next two years before a forecasted slowdown in 2026, as some government incentives wind down. However, long-term infrastructure and electric vehicle project investments promise continued opportunities. The growth in automation also raises new needs: for a skilled workforce, retraining, and cross-industry collaboration in robotics, AI, and IoT.

A Nation on the Move

India’s achievement as the world’s sixth-largest robot installer is about more than hardware—it’s a story of ambition, transformation, and a bet on the future. With every new robot that joins a production line, India moves one step closer to becoming a true industrial powerhouse, ready to compete on the global stage with cutting-edge technology, skilled human resources, and a new vision for manufacturing excellence.
