Bridging the Gender Gap in Education: NEP 2020’s Vision

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 marks a transformative step towards inclusive and equitable education in India. One of its key goals is to bridge the gender gap that continues to hinder educational progress for girls and women, particularly in rural and marginalised communities. Recognising the social and cultural barriers that prevent girls from accessing and continuing education, NEP 2020 lays out several strategies aimed at improving female participation across all levels of schooling.

Initiatives for Greater Inclusion and Safety

NEP 2020 emphasises the creation of safe and inclusive schooling environments. Proposals include setting up a ‘Gender-Inclusion Fund’ to build infrastructure like girls’ hostels and safe transportation, especially in underrepresented regions. It also calls for gender sensitisation of teachers and staff, the development of gender-neutral curricula, and flexible education pathways for dropouts. The policy further promotes the integration of vocational and digital learning to equip girls with practical skills, empowering them to be financially independent and confident.

Focus on Marginalised Groups and Holistic Support

To address the unique challenges faced by girls from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and minority groups, NEP 2020 supports targeted scholarships and mentorship programs. It encourages collaboration between schools, local communities, and NGOs to foster a culture that values and promotes girls’ education. By providing financial aid, emotional support, and mentorship, the policy seeks to ensure that girls not only enter the education system but also thrive and complete their academic journeys.
