India Supercharges School Innovation: AI From Class 3 And 50,000 New Atal Tinkering Labs To Transform Classrooms

The government’s ambitious plan to introduce AI from Class 3 onwards and establish 50,000 new Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) across the country is poised to transform classrooms, empower students, and bridge the digital divide like never before.

CBSE has already drafted a structured AI curriculum, with NCERT and experts from IIT Madras finalising learning materials, digital content, and teacher training modules by December 2025. Teachers will receive specialised training to ensure they can guide students through AI concepts, coding, and digital tools, making technology accessible even in remote classrooms. The goal is to move beyond rote learning and empower every child to think critically, solve problems, and create digital solutions from an early age.

Atal Tinkering Labs: Hubs of Innovation

Alongside the AI curriculum, the government is scaling up Atal Tinkering Labs to 50,000 schools nationwide. These labs are designed to be mini innovation hubs, where students can experiment with robotics, sensors, 3D printing, and electronics. For rural and semi-urban schools, ATLs are a game-changer—offering students their first real exposure to hands-on STEM Education learning.

From building simple robots to designing smart devices, students in ATLs are not just passive learners but active creators. These labs are helping bridge the gap between textbook theory and real-world problem-solving, inspiring a new generation of young innovators. Schools with ATLs report a surge in student curiosity, teamwork, and confidence, as students take ownership of their projects and learn by doing.
