KU, NITI Aayog hold strategy meet to boost Atal tinkering labs in J&K
The University of Kashmir (KU) recently partnered with NITI Aayog for a focused strategy meeting aimed at strengthening and expanding the Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting gathered key stakeholders, including education officials, innovators, and mentors, to discuss practical ways of enhancing ATL functioning, ensuring sustained mentorship, and fostering an innovation culture in schools across the Union Territory.
Atal Tinkering Labs are powerful centres established under the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) by NITI Aayog, designed to nurture young minds by encouraging curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Jammu & Kashmir has made remarkable progress with 127 ATLs already functioning, and a goal to set up 500 more to reach more students across urban and rural areas.
Recognising the region’s unique geographical and social diversity, the meeting emphasised the customisation of ATL activities. It proposed cluster-based management, teacher training programs, and close collaboration with local tech and educational institutions to ensure that innovation is accessible and relevant for all students. Special focus was laid on building capacity in rural and underserved districts, along with sustained monitoring and evaluation.
J&K’s student innovators have already demonstrated a strong presence nationally, with high participation rates in innovation challenges such as the Atal Tinkering Marathon. The meeting reinforced AIM’s commitment to provide resources, mentorship, and funding to propel young inventors and entrepreneurs.
This strategic collaboration between KU and NITI Aayog marks a milestone in Jammu & Kashmir’s journey towards becoming a vibrant hub for technological creativity and STEM education, empowering the next generation with skills crucial for India’s future innovation landscape.
