International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2026: From Inclusion to Leadership in Global STEM Fields

Every year on February 11, the world observes the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a United Nations-designated occasion aimed at promoting gender equality in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). While remarkable progress has been made in opening doors for women and girls in STEM education and entry-level participation, the spotlight in 2026 has shifted toward a more urgent question: Who gets to lead?

Since its establishment by the UN General Assembly in 2015, this global day has served not only to celebrate contributions by women scientists but also to confront the stubborn gender gaps that still limit full participation at the highest echelons of science and research. According to UN and UNESCO data, women comprise less than one-third of researchers worldwide, and their representation shrinks further in fields such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and other emerging tech sectors.

In 2026, the conversation emphasises the leadership deficit that lies beyond access. While more girls than ever before are pursuing STEM education and entering scientific careers, far fewer are taking on decision-making roles in research institutions, corporate tech strategy, scientific governance or innovation leadership. This gap has real-world consequences: when women are absent from top-level discussions, critical decisions about AI ethics, public healthcare research priorities and digital policy risk overlooking perspectives that ensure inclusivity and equity.

Experts point to systemic barriers that contribute to this leadership divide. Cultural norms and workplace practices can subtly or overtly discourage women from aspiring to leadership roles, while stereotypes continue to impede confidence and visibility for female STEM professionals. There is also a shortage of bosses, sponsors, and mentors willing to advocate for and elevate women into positions where they can shape the future of science.

The 2026 international observance theme, “From Vision to Impact: Redefining STEM by Closing the Gender Gap,” reflects this shift in focus. Organised by UNESCO with global partners, discussions held in Paris and online convened scientists, policymakers, educators, and students to highlight concrete strategies that accelerate women’s advancement. Panels addressed gender equity in emerging technologies like AI, cybersecurity, health research and scientific entrepreneurship, reinforced with evidence and successful case studies from around the world.

The day also brings attention to education as a foundation for leadership, not only improving access but building confidence, AI literacy and ethical competencies that prepare women to lead in algorithmic development and high-impact scientific domains. It urges nations and organisations to invest not just in schooling, but in career pipelines, mentorship networks, inclusive hiring, and leadership development.

As the global community marks this observance, the message is clear: celebrating women in STEM is no longer just about achieving parity in classrooms or laboratories. It is about ensuring women are centre stage in shaping scientific priorities, governing emerging technologies and steering innovation so that the benefits of science are truly shared and representative of all humanity.
