IIT Madras Launches Free National STEM Faculty Training to Elevate Science Education.
In a transformative step for Indian STEM education, IIT Madras has unveiled a nationwide, free residential training initiative for college faculty specialising in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and biotechnology. The program, delivered through the newly inaugurated Teaching Learning Centre (TLC), is set to begin this August under the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme. Each batch will include 50 participants from colleges across India, offering an interdisciplinary, hands-on approach to teaching and research innovation.
Designed to enhance teaching effectiveness and enrich the learning experience for students, the program includes advanced lab work, exposure to frontier research, and modules on inquiry-based STEM curricula. Faculty members from both public and private institutions are encouraged to apply, reflecting the program’s focus on diversity and inclusion in line with the National Education Policy 2020. The overarching goal is to bolster student performance, foster greater STEM enrollment, and nurture an academic culture of curiosity and creativity.
This initiative marks a significant leap towards holistic capacity building in STEM at the national level. By investing in faculty development, IIT Madras and the Ministry of Education aim to amplify the quality of science teaching and prepare a new generation of students to thrive as innovators in India’s emerging knowledge-driven economy.
