STEM on Wheels: Mobile Science Lab Initiative Boosts Girls’ Access to STEM Education in India
In an important step toward improving access to science and technology education, a new initiative called “STEM on Wheels” was launched in Pune on the occasion of National Science Day. The program aims to bring practical STEM learning directly to schools that lack proper laboratory facilities, with a special focus on encouraging girls to participate in science and technology fields.
Many schools, especially in underserved communities, face challenges such as limited infrastructure, inadequate laboratory equipment, and a lack of resources for hands-on experiments. As a result, students often learn science only through textbooks without experiencing real experimentation. The STEM on Wheels initiative addresses this gap by introducing a mobile science laboratory that travels to schools and provides students with access to modern STEM tools and activities.
The mobile lab is equipped with educational resources that support interactive science learning, including curriculum-based experiments, introductory robotics modules, coding activities, and live demonstrations. Through these activities, students can better understand scientific concepts and develop important skills such as problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking. The initiative will initially reach around 12 schools and benefit approximately 1,200 students, many of whom previously had limited access to practical science education.
A key focus of the program is to encourage girls to explore careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). In many parts of the world, girls still face social and educational barriers when pursuing science-related fields. By providing early exposure to experiments, technology tools, and interactive learning experiences, STEM on Wheels aims to build confidence and spark curiosity among young female students.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by organisations and CSR programs to promote inclusive and accessible education in India. By taking science laboratories directly to schools, the program ensures that opportunities for innovation and scientific exploration are not limited by infrastructure constraints.
Overall, the STEM on Wheels project represents a significant step toward transforming STEM education in India. By combining mobility, technology, and hands-on learning, the initiative aims to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators while creating a more inclusive future for STEM education.
