Promoting sustainability and leadership: new international initiatives by WUNU in STEM education and youth support

West Ukrainian National University (WUNU) recently hosted a significant international online meeting focused on expanding cooperation in STEM education and youth support, particularly for young people affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This virtual session marked an important step toward strengthening international partnerships to empower students, including internally displaced persons and other vulnerable groups, through education, leadership development, and psychosocial support.

The meeting brought together key representatives from WUNU and the American-Ukrainian nonprofit Brave Generation a collaborative partnership that aims to broaden educational and support opportunities for Ukrainian youth. Participants included Oksana Koval, Director of the Education and Research Centre for Communications at WUNU; Ida Menton, international negotiations expert and former OSCE programme officer; Anastasia Vlasenko, Vice-President of Brave Generation; Diana Boiko, coordinator of WUNU’s STEM Laboratory; and Viktoria Korobii, interpreter at WUNU’s International Relations Office.

A key focus of the discussion was how to integrate STEM education initiatives with broader social support systems for young people who have endured war-related hardships. The university showcased its modern STEM space a learning environment actively used by students, schoolchildren, and displaced youth and discussed how such spaces could help foster creativity, critical thinking, and practical skills that are essential in today’s technology-driven world.

One standout programme highlighted during the meeting was STEM Leaders of Ukraine, an initiative designed to cultivate resilience and leadership among young women in STEM. The goal is to empower these students with digital literacy, practical STEM skills, and leadership capabilities, thereby enhancing gender equity in science and technology fields and contributing to Ukraine’s ongoing economic and democratic recovery.

The event also emphasised the comprehensive role that Brave Generation plays in youth development. The organisation runs several impactful programmes, including a Fellowship scholarship, an intensive eight-month course that prepares Ukrainian students for admission to world-class universities such as Harvard, Yale, and Columbia. Another programme, ImpactUA 2026, brings together students from Ukrainian and American universities to collaborate with Ukrainian NGOs, fostering cross-cultural learning and civic engagement. Additionally, Brave Generation supports initiatives aimed at boosting women’s leadership (such as EmpowerHER, backed by UN Women), and provides mentoring and psychological support for students and young professionals.

Participants in the meeting explored potential areas for deeper cooperation, including mentoring schemes, language support, educational programme development, mental health services, and strategies for reintegrating young people into society after displacement or trauma. All parties expressed strong interest in continuing joint efforts and expanding educational and support networks that combine academic excellence with holistic youth development.

Overall, this initiative highlights how international academic collaboration can extend beyond traditional education to support psychological resilience, leadership skills, gender inclusion in STEM, and social reintegration, particularly in contexts affected by conflict and displacement.
