CBSE and AIIMS Launch MATE Project: Prioritising Student Mental Wellness
In a significant move to enhance student well-being, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in collaboration with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi, has launched the ‘MATE’ project—Mind Activation Through Education. This innovative initiative aims to prioritise mental health and emotional wellness among students, recognising the crucial link between psychological well-being and academic success.
The ‘MATE’ project is designed as a specialised training program for school counsellors and wellness teachers across CBSE-affiliated schools. Over a focused period of five days, participants undergo intensive training led by expert psychiatrists, psychologists, and mental health professionals from AIIMS. The objective is to equip these counsellors with the latest techniques and tools to support students facing academic stress, anxiety, and emotional challenges.
Central to the project is the ‘MATE-5’ framework, which addresses mental health through five core pillars, including resilience building, peer support, stress management, digital well-being, and parental involvement. The program encourages early intervention and creates an environment where students feel safe to discuss their mental health concerns openly without stigma.
The initiative also extends beyond the school counsellors by involving parents and the wider school community through sensitisation programs, thereby fostering a holistic ecosystem for mental wellness. School counsellors trained under ‘MATE’ will act as frontline mental health advocates, monitoring student well-being and guiding them towards appropriate resources.
Launching in the Delhi-NCR region as a pilot, the project aims to be scaled nationwide, reflecting the government’s commitment to mental health in education. With growing awareness of mental health challenges faced by students, ‘MATE’ embodies a proactive step towards nurturing emotionally balanced and academically confident learners.
By bringing mental wellness to the forefront, CBSE and AIIMS are not just enhancing educational outcomes but are also fostering a supportive culture where students can thrive personally and academically. The ‘MATE’ project is a beacon of hope for schools striving to make mental health a priority in today’s fast-paced world.
