Mobile STEM Lab Bringing Robotics, AI, and Space Science to Rural Schools in Punjab

In many rural government schools across India, science education often remains limited to textbooks and theoretical explanations. Lack of laboratory facilities, modern equipment, and exposure to emerging technologies prevents students from experiencing science in a practical way. To bridge this gap, IAS officer Dr. Preeti Yadav introduced an innovative initiative in Punjab a Mobile STEM Lab that brings hands-on science education directly to students in rural schools.

The project was launched in 2023 when Dr. Preeti Yadav was serving as the Deputy Commissioner of Rupnagar district. The initiative, known as “Skill on Wheels,” is essentially a fully equipped laboratory built inside a specially designed bus. Instead of students travelling long distances to access advanced laboratories, the lab travels to schools, ensuring that students from remote areas can experience practical science education.

The Mobile STEM Lab carries more than 300 pieces of scientific equipment and supports experiments for students from Classes 5 to 12. It includes tools and resources for physics, chemistry, and biology experiments that align with school curricula. However, the lab goes far beyond traditional school experiments. Students also get the opportunity to explore modern technologies such as robotics, coding, artificial intelligence, 3D printing, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The bus is designed as a compact innovation hub where around 35–40 students can learn at a time. It contains modular workstations, advanced laptops for coding, robotics kits, digital microscopes, telescopes for astronomy learning, and even rocket models for space science demonstrations. A smart board inside the bus enables interactive teaching, while an LED screen outside allows educational film screenings and community awareness sessions.

One of the key objectives of this initiative is to encourage curiosity and innovation among students. Instead of simply memorising scientific concepts, students can now see experiments in action, interact with technology, and understand how science works in real life. The project also aims to inspire students to pursue careers in science, engineering, and technology fields.

The design of the lab was supported by experts from IIT Ropar, ensuring that it meets modern educational and technical standards. The bus is also equipped with features such as air-conditioning, air purifiers, and a ramp for differently-abled students, making the learning environment inclusive and comfortable for everyone.

Beyond classroom experiments, the Mobile STEM Lab also promotes outdoor and environmental learning. Students participate in activities such as biodiversity mapping, bird watching, soil testing, and environmental science experiments, helping them understand the natural world around them.

Overall, the Mobile STEM Lab represents a powerful example of how innovative governance and technology can transform education. By taking science directly to rural schools, the initiative is helping thousands of students gain practical knowledge, develop critical thinking skills, and imagine new possibilities in the world of science and technology.
