Meghalaya STEM Fusion Lab Movement: Making Science & Math Fun for All
Meghalaya is making significant strides to transform the way students experience science and mathematics through the innovative “STEM Fusion” movement. Inaugurated by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on August 18, 2025, at the State Convention Centre in Shillong, this initiative aims to make STEM subjects engaging, interactive, and enjoyable for students across the state.
The STEM Fusion workshop and student exhibition, organised by the North East Centre for Technology Application and Research (NECTAR), Smart Village Movement, and IISER Pune, brought together over 400 students and 80 teachers showcasing 90 innovative projects. The movement focuses on creating environments where students can experiment and explore science and math in fun and practical ways, moving beyond traditional classroom learning.
Chief Minister Sangma acknowledged that many students perceive science and maths as serious and intimidating subjects, which often diminishes enthusiasm. The STEM Fusion initiative seeks to reverse this trend by making these subjects attractive, interactive, and curiosity-driven. To expand reach, the government is promoting “Lab on Wheels” mobile science labs to bring hands-on STEM learning to remote and rural areas.
In addition, the movement encourages mandatory science and math competitions at the school, district, and state levels to cultivate a culture of innovation and healthy competition. The government has also announced cash prizes to reward outstanding projects, with top prizes amounting to Rs 2 lakh and support for select innovative projects through funding.
The STEM Fusion initiative reflects a broader vision to build a strong ecosystem supporting STEM education in Meghalaya, involving collaboration among the education department, technology organisations, entrepreneurs, and community partners. This progressive approach aims to ignite students’ passion for STEM, equipping them with the skills and curiosity needed to succeed in a technology-driven future.
By making science and mathematics fun and accessible, Meghalaya’s STEM Fusion movement is setting an inspiring example for educational development in the region and beyond.
