Rising Reach: Over 4,500 CBSE Schools Now Offer AI
In the 2024–25 academic year, more than 4,538 CBSE‑affiliated schools began offering Artificial Intelligence as a skill subject to Class 9 students, marking a significant expansion of AI access at the secondary level. First introduced by the board in 2019, the AI curriculum starts with a 15-hour module in Class 8 and continues as a full-fledged skill subject through Classes 9 to 12.
Millions Embrace Tech Education
According to Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary, around 7,90,999 students enrolled in AI in Classes 9 and 10 during 2024–25. Senior classes also showed strong interest, with 50,343 students opting for AI in Classes 11 and 12 . This massive uptake reflects a growing appetite among students for future‑focused, tech‑driven learning aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 vision.
Infrastructure in Place, Challenges Ahead
The Ministry’s data reveals that out of 30,373 CBSE schools, 29,719 meet the board’s IT infrastructure standards, ensuring these AI programs can be delivered effectively. While the groundwork is solid, ongoing success will depend on sustained teacher training, quality of AI instruction, and robust classroom implementation to truly prepare students for a digital future.
