India’s STEM Workforce: A Global Powerhouse
India contributes approximately 28% of the world’s STEM workforce and 23% of global software engineering talent, making it a pivotal hub for multinational corporations setting up Global Capability Centres (GCCs) . With over 1,700 GCCs by fiscal year 2024, employing around 1.9 million professionals, the country has become the “GCC capital of the world” .
Evolved Role: From Support Centres to Innovation Engines
GCCs in India are progressing beyond cost-saving and routine tasks. Nearly half now manage full product lifecycles, engaging in high-value roles like product managers, AI ethics officers, and quantum architects. The rising presence of engineering research & development units—growing 30% faster than overall GCC growth—underscores India’s shift to innovation-led operations.
Scaling Up: Expansion, Tier-II Growth & Future Outlook
India’s GCC landscape is growing fast: over 400 new centres were established between FY 2019 and FY 2024, with expectations of reaching 2,100–2,200 GCCs by 2030, and headcount rising to 2.5–2.8 million, generating nearly $100 billion in revenue. The spread into Tier-II and III cities—like Jaipur, Coimbatore, and Ahmedabad—is fueled by cost, talent availability, and government incentives With increasing AI and R&D adoption, India’s STEM capabilities will remain key to GCC-led global innovation.
