Rising Orthopaedic Challenges Among Youth

Dr. Balvir Kumar, former Senior Medical Officer and MS in Orthopaedics, highlighted a growing trend of complex orthopaedic injuries among younger, more active populations. He attributed this to high-speed two-wheeler accidents, especially in congested city areas where crashes often occur at speeds above 100 km/h. These high-velocity traumas result in severe fractures and musculoskeletal damage, demanding intensive medical interventions and long recovery periods.

Battling Myths and Embracing Modern Care

Dr. Kumar stressed the continued prevalence of myths surrounding orthopaedic treatment, particularly in rural regions. He pointed out that many individuals still seek “desi” or traditional remedies from unqualified practitioners for fractures and joint issues. Such delays in proper care often worsen patient outcomes. He called for widespread community awareness programmes to educate people on the importance of early intervention and professional medical treatment. 

Technological Advances Transforming Orthopaedics

Discussing the impact of modern technology, Dr. Kumar noted that robotics and AI have significantly enhanced orthopaedic surgeries by improving precision, reducing errors, and shortening recovery time. While such advancements are largely limited to elite institutions like PGI-Chandigarh and AIIMS-New Delhi, innovations continue to emerge. He also shared his own experience of performing complex nerve repair surgeries in a resource-limited hospital in 2004, demonstrating that skill and creativity can overcome technological limitations.
