Why It Exists

A Competition Built for Builders, Not Just Test-Takers

The STEM Innovation Challenge exists for students who’d rather build something real than fill in another bubble sheet. Teams pick a track, work on a project over several weeks, and submit it for review by working engineers, researchers, and educators. No single ‘right’ answer — just a working project, a clear explanation of how it was built, and a case for why it matters.

Who Is It For

Is the Challenge Right for Your Team?

Built for anyone ready to move past textbook projects and build something they’d actually stand behind.

Not Just Another Science Fair

Competitions, Done Differently.

Most competitions reward the pitch. This one is built around the thing your team actually made.

The Usual Approach

Typical Competitions

Judging
Scored mostly on the pitch or the poster, not the build
Topic
Pick from a fixed list of predefined project ideas
Team Format
Often solo-only or school-team-only, not both
Feedback
Results announced with little to no feedback
Access
Entry fees or school-only participation

The Makers’ Muse Difference

STEM Innovation Challenge

Judging
Scored on the working project first — pitch second
Topic
Pick your own problem inside a broad track
Team Format
Solo or teams of up to four, school or independent
Feedback
Every entrant gets scoring feedback, not just a rank
Access
Free to enter, open nationwide, Grades 6–12

What's at Stake

Prizes & Recognition

Every participant walks away with something — recognition scales with how far your project goes.

A Look Inside Past Challenges

Build sessions, mentor check-ins, live finals, and the moment a team’s name gets called — a peek at what a cycle looks like.

Getting In

How to Register

  • Form your team. One to four members, grades 6–12. Solo entries are welcome too.
  • Pick a track. Robotics, Coding & App Development, AI & Machine Learning, or Innovation & Science Project.
  • Fill out the registration form. Takes about five minutes — team details, school (if any), and your chosen track.
  • Get your resource kit. Problem statement guides, sample datasets, and mentor office-hour access, sent after registration.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

No. You can register independently or as part of a school team — both are treated equally in judging.

Submit whatever you have by the deadline. Partial, well-documented work is judged on what was actually built, not penalized for being incomplete — though finished projects naturally score higher on technical execution.

No, registration is free. Teams are responsible for their own materials if a track requires physical components (like Robotics).

Yes, but each track needs a separate registration and a separate project — you can’t submit one project across two tracks.

Yes, teams need access to their own robotics kit or components. If your school doesn’t have one, Makers’ Muse’s STEM lab partner schools have access through their existing setup.

Yes. Optional weekly office hours are open to every registered team, run by mentors relevant to each track.

A first-round panel reviews every submission against the judging criteria and shortlists teams for live finals, where a separate panel does the final scoring.
