Six weeks to write four thousand words sounds generous, until it isn’t. Nothing skipped. 

The literature review inside the paper follows the same logic of connection over listing. Bad version: five paragraphs, each summarizing one source, none of them talking to the others, basically diary entries with citations attached. Good version: one paragraph naming exactly where three sources agree, where two of them pull in different directions, and what none of them actually got around to testing. That second version is analysis. The first one is just filing. 

Method, Results, and What They Actually Mean 

The method section needs enough specificity that another student could repeat the study using only what’s written: population, sample size, actual method, tools, how data got recorded. 

Results report what was found, plainly; no interpreting yet, that comes later. Tables or figures help wherever a pattern is genuinely clearer visually than buried in a paragraph of numbers. Report whatever complicates the expected outcome exactly as honestly as whatever confirms it, no quiet trimming either way. 

Discussion is where meaning finally gets explained, checked against the literature review, and held up honestly against what the data can actually support. A relationship between two variables never proves one caused the other, full stop, and claiming otherwise is one of the most common overreaches student writers make. 

Say What’s Still Uncertain, Don’t Hide It 

A paper that claims zero limitations is usually hiding something, not proving something. Every real study has a weak spot somewhere, a small sample, a short window of time, a variable that couldn’t quite be controlled, and naming it directly makes the conclusion more trustworthy, not less. Answer the original question first, in a sentence or two, then say plainly what’s still unknown. 

References and citations get checked the same way a teacher checks a math proof, line by line. Cite something in the text, and it needs a matching entry in the reference list. List something in the references, and it needs to actually show up somewhere in the paper, no floating entries either direction.  

Tables and figures earn their place with captions that make sense on their own, without forcing a reader back into the surrounding paragraph to decode what they’re looking at. Appendices are where the extra material lives: raw survey questions, additional data tables, kept out of the way of the main argument. 

Read It Out Loud. Does It Still Sound Like Them? 

Try this test on any edited draft: read it out loud, and ask whether it still sounds like the same student who described the project out loud three months ago, just tighter, more organized, more sure of itself. If yes, the editing worked. If the paragraph suddenly sounds like it was written by someone twice their age, with a vocabulary they’ve never actually used in conversation, something’s gone wrong, and it’s not a small thing. 

Academic writing for students should survive that test every time. A mentor pointing out a confusing sentence, that’s editing. A mentor flagging a claim with nothing backing it up, still editing. A mentor rewriting the whole paragraph in their own voice and handing it back labeled as the student’s, that’s not editing anymore, whatever anyone wants to call it. Call it what it actually is: someone else wrote part of this paper. 

Nobody sets out to blur that line on purpose, usually. It happens gradually, one small fix at a time, each one reasonable on its own, until the paragraph belongs to somebody else entirely. That’s exactly why it’s worth checking deliberately, not assuming good intentions will catch it automatically. 

From First Draft to Something Finished 

  • First draft. Get the whole structure down roughly before polishing any single section. 
  • Mentor comments. Specific, section-by-section notes, never a rewritten copy. 
  • Revision rounds. Two or three passes, usually, tightening structure and evidence, not just word choice. 
  • Proofreading. A separate final pass, purely grammar, formatting, consistency. 
  • Version control. Dated drafts kept along the way, so nothing important vanishes between rounds. 

Where a Sentence Came From Still Matters 

When you take a few words from a person’s writing, you still have their structure. True paraphrasing means altering the structure of the sentences apart from simply substituting some of the original words with their synonyms. AI sits in a specific, limited spot in all this. Organizing scattered notes, tightening an awkward sentence, sure, that’s fine. Writing the actual analysis or drawing the conclusions, no, that crosses into work that has to stay the student’s. And wherever AI genuinely helped with the manuscript, that help belongs in the open, disclosed plainly, not left for someone to discover later and wonder what else got left out.
