The United Arab Emirates (UAE) government has announced an extension of distance learning for all schools and universities across the country until April 17, 2026, affecting millions of students and educators nationwide. The decision, confirmed by the Ministry of Education, reflects ongoing efforts to prioritise student safety while ensuring continuity in academic activities amid evolving regional conditions.

The extension applies to all educational institutions, including nurseries, kindergartens, public and private schools, as well as higher education institutions. Students will continue attending classes through digital platforms, participating in live virtual sessions, accessing recorded lectures, submitting assignments online, and interacting with teachers remotely.

Authorities have stated that the move is primarily driven by safety and precautionary concerns, with the well-being of students, teachers, and administrative staff being the top priority. The decision also comes in the context of ongoing regional tensions and disruptions, which have influenced several policy measures across sectors, including education.

Distance learning in the UAE initially began earlier in March and has been extended multiple times as the situation evolved. Officials have clarified that the April 17 deadline is not final, and the situation will continue to be reviewed on a weekly basis. Further extensions or a phased return to physical classrooms will depend on future assessments by authorities.

The continued reliance on online education has led to significant adjustments in academic schedules and assessment methods. In some cases, major examination boards have introduced alternative evaluation systems, including internal assessments, project work, and practical performance, especially where traditional exams could not be conducted.
